What refurbished means

Why are laptops returned and resold as refurbished, and where do they come from?

Saurabh Vyas

Co-founder, Edify

Refurbished laptops come from several well-defined supply channels: corporate fleets replaced on 3 to 5 year refresh cycles, operating leases returned at the end of term, cancelled orders from bulk procurement, display units from retail stores, and individual returns within a buyer's return window. Edify sources from corporate fleets, leasing returns, cancelled orders and display units, which means the devices typically have structured usage histories and arrive in more predictable condition than random consumer trade-ins. None of these sourcing categories involve defective units discarded by frustrated users; the label "refurbished" simply means the device changed ownership and was inspected before resale. Understanding the source channel matters because it directly predicts battery health, cosmetic condition and remaining lifespan, so a transparent seller should be clear about where its inventory comes from.
