Which laptop generation is best, and what is the minimum to buy in 2026?

Co-founder, Edify GSC: which generation laptop is best/latest, ~10, Edify

"Generation" refers to how new a laptop's processor is, for example an Intel Core i5 "11th Gen" is newer than an "8th Gen", and a newer generation generally means better speed, efficiency and battery life. For a refurbished laptop in 2026, a practical floor is 8th Generation Intel (or AMD Ryzen 3000 series) or newer: this comfortably handles Windows 11, everyday work, study, browsing and most coding. Below that, machines still work but feel slower and have shorter software support. The value sweet spot today is 10th to 12th Gen i5, plenty of performance for most users at a strong refurbished price. Pair the generation with at least 8GB RAM (16GB preferred) and an SSD; those two matter more for everyday speed than chasing the very latest chip. At Edify, the processor generation is listed clearly on every product and verified in the Final Quality Check, so you can match the generation to your budget with confidence.
