i3 vs i5 vs i7: which processor do I need?

For most everyday use, an i5 (10th to 12th Gen) is the right choice, and it is the value sweet spot in refurbished laptops in 2026. An i3 handles browsing, documents, video calls and light spreadsheets without trouble, and is a sensible pick if your budget is tight. An i5 adds meaningful headroom for multitasking, running several browser tabs, Tally or light creative work simultaneously. An i7 is worth the premium only if you are doing video editing, 3D rendering, software development with heavy compiles, or running virtual machines regularly. On generation: stick to 10th Gen Intel or newer for a snappy experience. An 8th or 9th Gen i5 at a very low price is acceptable, but anything older risks feeling dated within a year. Pairing the right processor with an SSD and at least 8GB RAM matters as much as the chip itself.
