Windows and OS

Is the Windows on a refurbished laptop legal, and will it keep getting updates?

Windows on a properly refurbished laptop should be legal and update-capable, but the answer depends entirely on how the seller has handled it. At Edify, laptops ship with Windows 11 Pro freshly reinstalled. Microsoft's update cadence is tied to the licence and activation status, not the age of the hardware, so an activated copy receives security patches and feature updates through the standard Windows Update channel like any other machine. The risk with grey-market or unverified sellers is that some use unactivated copies or pirated keys, which fail Microsoft's activation checks, cannot update normally, and display watermarks. A clean reinstall on certified hardware with a valid licence avoids all of this. You can verify activation status yourself in Settings under System, then Activation. Edify's 12-month hardware warranty covers the machine, not the OS, which is standard practice across the industry.
