How do I responsibly recycle or dispose of my old laptop in India?

Ashwini Purohit

Co-founder & Director, Edify

To dispose of an old laptop responsibly in India, do not throw it in regular household waste; route it through a legitimate channel instead. Your best options, in order: first, if it still works, sell or donate it so the device stays in use, which is the most sustainable outcome; second, hand it to an authorised e-waste recycler or a manufacturer take-back programme (many brands run collection under India's E-Waste Management Rules); third, use a trade-in or buyback scheme. Before parting with it, securely wipe your data and sign out of all accounts. A reuse-first path is better than recycling because it preserves the device's remaining value and embodied carbon rather than breaking it down for materials. Edify's Buyback Program is one such reuse-first route: a working laptop is assessed, securely wiped and refurbished back into circulation rather than scrapped. Whatever channel you choose, the key is keeping the device out of landfill and out of the informal waste stream.
